There is a general consensus that smallholder farming needs to become more productive, more sustainable and more profitable. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) or drone-based system services can contribute towards these goals by bringing some of the tools of precision agriculture to producers, which include large and medium-scale holdings and associations of small-scale farmers growing the same crop in contiguous areas. In 2018-19, CTA is upscaling its activities to increase the number of countries covered and the number of UAS operators across Africa and to assess via scientific on-site research, the costs and benefits of the technology. These activities and this project are framed within the larger intervention known as Transforming Africa’s Agriculture: Eyes in the sky, smart techs on the ground.
RCID Ltd, in collaboration with CTA, the University of Rwanda, and Charis Ltd, conducted a comprehensive study from 2017 to 2019 to assess the viability of Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) services in smallholder wheat and potato farming in Musanze District, Rwanda. The study aimed to determine whether smallholder farmers, acting on data-driven advice generated via UAS, could increase their net income through higher yields or reduced costs, such as lower fertilizer use.
The research began with a baseline survey of smallholder farmers cultivating Irish potatoes and wheat in the region. This was followed by extensive training and extension services, which guided farmers from production to harvest, utilizing UAS technology to optimize their practices.
One of the key components of the study was to assess the willingness of individual farmers and farmer cooperatives to pay for UAS advisory services by analyzing a cost-benefit analysis comparing farmers who received UAS-based advisory services with a control group that relied on conventional farming advice. The findings of this study contributed to the broader initiative of transforming African agriculture by integrating advanced technologies like UAS into traditional farming practices. The project not only highlighted the potential of UAS to enhance agricultural productivity but also explored its economic viability, offering valuable lessons for the future of precision agriculture in Rwanda and beyond.

The Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) projects in Rwanda focus on promoting sustainable farming practices and regenerative agriculture to improve food security, environmental resilience, and economic growth. Key initiatives include assessing gaps in organic agriculture systems, integrating agro-ecological practices in agricultural programs, and supporting organic farming for crops like pineapples and strawberries. Studies have identified challenges such as limited access to organic inputs, high certification costs, and low private-sector involvement. Recommendations emphasize the need for policy reforms, capacity building, and public-private partnerships to address these issues. Projects like the Transforming Rural Economies and Youth Livelihoods (TREYL) assessment highlight the importance of regenerative agriculture for youth and rural economic development. Additionally, assessments of organic fertilizer supply and usage call for stronger advocacy to include organic fertilizers in government support programs, thereby enhancing the agricultural sector's sustainability and productivity in Rwanda.
Climate Change, Environment, Forest, water, sanitation and transport, eco-tourism.
The projects in Climate Change, Environment, Forest, Water, Sanitation, and Eco-Tourism in Rwanda involve diverse initiatives aimed at fostering resilience, sustainability, and community empowerment. Key projects include evaluating and supporting FONERWA's climate resilience efforts, biodiversity protection near Nyungwe National Park, and forest landscape restoration for improved livelihoods. Other initiatives, such as the AREECA project and SOS Rwanda's agroforestry programs, focus on forest and ecosystem restoration, food security, and sustainable agricultural practices. Feasibility studies in districts like Rulindo and Rwamagana emphasize land use management, agroforestry, and green technologies like solar irrigation and greenhouse farming to mitigate climate impacts. Additionally, the Livelihood Restoration Program (LRP) under the Rwanda-Burundi interconnection project provides modules on climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable practices for communities affected by infrastructure projects. These programs collectively aim to enhance environmental conservation, boost economic opportunities, and support climate adaptation across Rwanda
GENDER EQUALITY, FINANCIAL INCLUSION, AND YOUTH
The projects focused on addressing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and promoting women’s empowerment in Rwanda include a variety of targeted initiatives. The Speak Out Project, funded by UK Aid Direct and implemented by ActionAid Rwanda in partnership with the Faith Victory Association (FVA), aimed to support survivors of violence, particularly young women affected by teenage pregnancies. Operating across four districts, the project strengthened skills in Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) and GBV, boosting beneficiaries' confidence to report and combat violence. Additionally, the POWER project, in collaboration with FVA, empowered 4,050 women smallholder farmers, encouraging them to advocate for their rights and address gender inequities that hinder their economic participation. Lastly, CARE International Rwanda’s mid-term program review for 2022-2025, in partnership with MDF Training and RCID Ltd., highlights ongoing efforts to bridge gender equality gaps, combat SGBV, and promote economic and health rights for women and girls. The program has made significant progress, reaching 1,272,392 women and girls (85% of its target) and meeting objectives in Gender Equality, Right to Health, Economic Justice, and Climate Justice, in alignment with Rwanda's Vision 2050 and CARE Global priorities.
